Lessons in Fashion:
a sporadic series where I share little tips with you that help make my wardrobe stretch.

Today's Lesson:
Don't be scared to wear a pencil skirt in the winter!

Here in Iowa, weather is always an adventure. We're currently in the heart of winter. It was close to 0*F this past weekend. I love a good pencil skirt, though! I find that if I add a good pair of tights or leggings, I can make it work.  Today I'm showing you three ways to wear this gorgeous pencil skirt I received from Sweetly Made by MJ! It is such a high quality and comfortable skirt. Monique made it exactly to my measurements so it fits like a glove! Also, you have a chance to win one for yourself at the end of the post.

{with chambray and sparkles}

A chambray top is so versatile. I love adding it to my pencil skirt for a different look. Since the skirt is neutral, it could seem bland just straight with the chambray, but adding a little color with tights and a little sparkle with jewelry take it up a notch.

{with a graphic tee and cardigan}

Adding a fun graphic tee can make a pencil skirt feel a little less business and more casual. I love how plum, gray, and black look together. I added my riding boots for a little warmth.

{with a sweater and scarf}

The neutrality of the colors of this skirt really make it so versatile, which is another reason why I love it. I also love a cozy pullover sweater. Adding some pops of color with a scarf and booties make this outfit happening!

Which of these is your favorite? Head over to Instagram tomorrow (Tuesday) to see which I chose to wear.

I'm thrilled to introduce you to the woman who created this skirt, Monique Joy!

Hello everyone! I’m Monique Joy, owner and creator of SweetlyMadebyMJ on Etsy. I’m a 36-year old wife, mother, amateur chef and former Medical Assistant living in Phoenix, Arizona originally from Southern California. I discovered the world of sewing a few years ago while pregnant with my youngest child.

I am 100% self-taught and have carefully created my own formulas for the perfect pencil skirt using professional finishes and custom labels. Each one listed in my shop has been through my tough test of trial and error to make sure it will give an amazing fit.

Having been inspired by photos of my mother from the 1960’s, I was motivated to redesign the typical pencil skirt in my own way. With handpicked luxury knit fabrics in classic yet edgy patterns, it has become my passion to create these custom & ready to wear skirts.

Merging classic femininity with modern fashion, I find the simplicity to be extremely versatile. With your own flair and accessories, I love to see how others style the skirts I create with their own twist.

One of my absolute favorite quotes is, “Fashion is the art and you are the canvas.” This summarizes in one simple sentence why I do what I do and continue to pursue my dream of making women of all shapes and sizes feel beautiful in a timeless pencil skirt. This is my art and I’m so excited to share it with all of you!

  1. Cute pairings! I own only one skirt (a maxi) and hardly EVER wear it but I do like pairing dresses with tights.

  2. I love how pencil skirts look on others, not on me. And wearing one in the winter, I would freeze in my classroom. The place is always so cold. Your outfits are so classy and I love the color blends you put together.
